Hospital and prison officials confirm that an inmate from the Mercer County Jail who was undergoing treatment at UPMC Hamot walked away from the hospital, and is at large.
It happened earlier Saturday, and the man was last seen heading west on Second Street in downtown Erie.

According to UPMC Hamot, the inmate was under care at the hospital without requirement of guards.  The hospital issued the following statement:

An individual who is not in the custody of law enforcement may leave the hospital against medical advice or at their own discretion. Please direct additional questions to the Mercer Co. Department of Corrections.

Officials at the Mercer County Jail tell Erie News Now that an inmate can be "medically furloughed" while under medical treatment at the hospital, and then picked up by prison officials and returned to the jail when that treatment is completed.

Sources say the inmate in question is not considered dangerous.

A message sent out to the Gannon University campus community through its alert system informed anyone who sees a man with a goatee and buzz cut who is wearing an orange jumpsuit to call 911.

If the inmate is located, he will be taken into custody and held in Erie, until it's determined whether he'll go back to the hospital to complete treatment, or be returned to the jail.
