Millcreek Township Supervisors unanimously confirmed the hiring of the Township's new Animal Resource Officer (ARO) at the Supervisor Meeting Tuesday night.

The Township said William Sandstrom comes with over 20 years of animal care experience. Sandstrom is an Erie native who worked as a Humane Police Officer for the Humane Society of Northwest Pennsylvania at the beginning of his career.

“We are excited to have such an experienced hire that will work to develop the future of
this position with care and compassion,” said Supervisor and Planning and Development liaison Dan Ouellet.

The ARO position was moved to the Code Enforcement Department from the Police Department in 2023 to accommodate the new title and responsibilities, according to the Township.

The ARO will follow the new standard operating procedures which emphasizes compassionate care. Millcreek Township said the focus of the new ARO will be to create and maintain close relationships with established animal welfare organizations in the area.
