As we get into this second week of the New Year, many individuals may still be working on resolutions to try something new or to get more exercise.

One step, at a time, to get exercise and problem-solve.

"I don't consider this fitness, I'm like a kid on a playground," said Joe Pawlowski. "This is awesome."

Joe Pawlowski is a regular at Ascend Erie. He started the sport of climbing five years ago with his wife. And both are elated to have this indoor option to enjoy in the city's downtown.

"When you walk into the back of the facility, you see 52-foot walls, you see top rope climbing, auto belay climbing, and lead climbing," said David Bonner, Director of Strategic Partnerships.

There's 9,000 square feet of climbing surfaces in the 20,000 square foot facility. That includes bouldering on the second floor.

"The main difference between bouldering and top rope climbing: Bouldering tends to be more of a physical, mental challenge," said David. "Top rope climbing tends to be more about endurance."

Erie News Now captured Nick Barbero of Erie during his first time climbing.

"I loved it," exclaimed Nick. His advice to other first-timers, "Take it slow, think about what you're doing."

When anyone walks in the doors of Ascend Erie, waivers need filled out. They can be done at the kiosks - or online. No matter if you want a membership, day pass, tour, or basics demonstrated.

"And if it's your first time in the gym, your shoes and chalk rental are free," said Chris. "On the house, your first time here."

General manager of Ascend Erie Chris Rosato says you don't even have to climb, you can just watch.

There are areas of the gym anyone can use no matter the age. The gym also has a separate workout area, and a yoga studio, too.

A venue brought to life in 2022, thanks to the EDDC, the Erie Downtown Development Corporation.

"Bringing a climbing gym to Erie opens up climbing to anyone in Erie and makes it a place they can come in after work, before work, they can come in on their lunch hour, climb for an hour, and then resume their life," said David.

What's more is that there is a community of climbers who want to perfect their hobby, even shop for gear, and simply people just wishing to try something new and climb to new heights.

This is the fourth gym the Ascend Climbing Group has opened. Two in Pittsburgh and one in Youngstown.

Children under the age of 14 need to have parental supervision at Ascend Erie.
