Frigid Temperatures Perfect for Grape Picking for Ice Wine

The frigid temperatures can be tough to bear, but there is one positive impact this week.
The cold weather creates the perfect condition for gathering the frozen grapes for ice wine.
The grapes for ice wine can only be harvested when they are frozen naturally. That means temperatures between 12 and 18 degrees for at least a day or two.
Out at Mazza Vineyards in North East, volunteers are spending the day walking the rows of vines and grabbing frozen, withered grapes from inside the netting, collecting this year's bounty.
Once the bins are filled, the frozen fruit will be pressed at Mazza's.
The process is lengthy and cold but memorable.
"It's a great experience," said John Oliver. "This is something that very few areas are producing ice wine, so we need to be proud of it and produce as much as we can. That's why I've been out here."
