Preventing Frostbite in Frigid Temperatures
The frigid, single-digit temperatures in our region may lead to frostbite.
Body parts farther from the core are most vulnerable.
UPMC Hamot's Dr. Kristin Juhasz tells us that frostbite can lead to a loss of feeling and color in affected areas, which could cause permanent damage if untreated. If symptoms start, Dr. Juhasz advises moving to a warmer environment, removing wet clothing and gradually rewarming the body.
"For those of us that might be outside shoveling snow, the key in all of this is making sure that we're using the appropriate clothing." Said Dr. Juhasz. "So, making sure that we have heavy gloves on, boots that are insulated, coats that have enough coverage and taking frequent breaks."
