LATEST: Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has lifted the temporary speed limit restrictions that were in place on Interstates 79, 80, 86, 90 and 376 as of 9 a.m.

EARLIER: Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is planning to reduce the speed limit to 45 mph on several interstates due to the icy weather expected.

It is expected to go into effect Tuesday at 4 a.m. on the following interstates:

  • Interstate 79 from Interstate 90 to Interstate 376
  • Interstate 80 from the Ohio state line to the Clearfield/Jefferson County line
  • Interstate 86 from the beginning of I-86 to the New York state line
  • Interstate 90 from the Ohio state line to the New York state line
  • Interstate 376 from I-80 to Interstate 76

The start time for the speed limit reduction could be adjusted based on weather conditions.

When put into place, commercial vehicles must move to the right lane.

The goal is to keep the interstates open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm. PennDOT will remove the travel restrictions when conditions improve.

PennDOT is asking drivers to use caution and keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Remove all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, and vehicle lights, in addition to the hood and roof of your car before driving and as often as needed
  • Slow down and increase your following distance
  • Avoid sudden stops and starts
  • Beware of roads that may look wet, but are actually frozen, often referred to as “black ice”
  • Give yourself extra time during your commute
