Erie County received $55,000 in Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) funds to improve traffic safety along the Bayfront Connector.

Pennsylvania's ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.

The $55,000 will be used to replace and upgrade 201 city-owned streetlights with new LED light fixtures.

Grant funding is supplied by fines from red light violations at 34 intersections in Philadelphia.

“This program helps communities across the state make important investments in traffic flow and safety,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “These improvements complement the many road, bridge, and multimodal projects happening in Pennsylvania, and are in line with the Shapiro Administration’s commitment to invest in Pennsylvania’s infrastructure and help keep communities connected safely to opportunity and each other.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will be distributing approximately $13 million in ARLE funding to 35 municipalities statewide to fund 39 safety projects.

Pennsylvania's ARLE program was established in 2010.
