Spring Covid Boosters Expected for High-Risk Groups
The CDC is considering yet another covid vaccine roll-out this spring. The advisory committee will meet this month to decide on a booster for people that are high risk.
Epidemiologist and Erie News Now contributor Dr. Becky Dawson tells us that we may be seeing another vaccine roll-out this spring.
" Covid hasn't become seasonal," said Dr. Dawson. "If you look at the patterns from the summers of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, we actually saw large spikes in the middle of the summer."
Health experts say that the covid booster's protection starts waning after about 6 months, hence the CDC's push for a spring booster. However, vaccine rates are low. Only 21% of adults received the latest version of the vaccine.
The health officials at LECOM's covid vaccine clinic encourage everyone to stay updated on their vaccines.
"Older adults are advocates for vaccines, and participation is higher in that group. However, younger individuals did not get vaccinated," said Pharmacist Jason Turba.
Dr. Dawson tells us that yes, she recognizes that the vaccine comes with side effects, but she hopes that people choose the temporary discomfort over the long-term risks of covid.
