ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)--Artificial intelligence AND ITS CAPABILITIES IS A TOPIC OF DISCUSSION IN ALBANY

SOME LAWMAKERS ADVOCATE FOR INVESTING IN EMPIRE Ai—A PROPOSED CONSORTIUM OF universities AND COLLEGES INCLUDING SUNY AND CUNY TO LAUNCH AN AI COMPUTER CENTER.   

THE CENTER INTENDS TO PROMOTE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND CREATE JOBS. LAWMAKERS ARE ASKING FOR $250 MILLION IN THE STATE BUDGET DIRECTLY FOR THIS PROGRAM.  

SOME LAWMAKERS SAid THIS PROJECT WOULD ALLOW MORE RESEARCH INTO AI.  

“I think having a separate center that’s run by the universities is one of the best things that we can do to reduce the risks that come from AI. It’s taking AI research out of solely being in the for-profit domain and allowing academic researchers that can look at it from any angle to explore more,” said Assembly Member Alex Bores (D-Assembly District 73).

SUNY CHANCELLOR JOHN KING SAid THE BENEFITS OF THE INITIATIVE WILL REACH MILLIONS OF NEW YORKERS ACROSS THE STATE ON SUNY AND OTHER UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES.  

KING SAid ITS IMPORTANT HIGHER EDUCATION PLAY A ROLE IN Ai DEVELOPMENT.  

“Once every generation or perhaps even less often than that, a technological wave comes along so powerful that it both promises and threatens to change everything about how we live. And that’s why putting education at the center of the AI revolution is so important,” he said. 

KING SAid IT’S IMPORTANT FOR HIGHER EDUCATION TO QUESTION AND DEVELOP THE ETHICS AROUND IT AND TO SEE DIVERSITY AND EQUITY REFLECTED IN AI DEVELOPMENT.
