Measles cases are climbing. The number of cases in the United States this year have already surpassed last year's total.

According to the CDC, 64 Measles cases have been reported across 17 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York City, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

Health officials say this is a disease that was once considered eliminated in the United States.

"Things that we haven't seen in years didn't go away by magic," said UPMC Pediatrician Robert Burns.

Here at home, healthcare providers are concerned we too will see an outbreak of the Measles. Children 12 months of age are recommended to get the first dose of the MMR vaccine.

The CDC notes many of the reported measles cases are linked to international travel.  Erie News Now medical contributor Dr. Becky Dawson recommends checking in with your primary care Dr ahead of traveling with an infant.
