The eclipse is putting life on hold for many Erieties—and civic engagement is no exception.

If you have not registered to vote in the April 23rd primaries yet, everywhere else in Pennsylvania has a deadline of April 8th.

Luckily, Erie county got an extension.

The county clerk office knew that any citizens wanting to get their last minute registration in would face issues.

Traffic will be crazy, parking impossible to find, and even those who want to register online might face connection issues with so many out-of-towners in the area.

So, Erie County Clerk Karen Chillcott got the voter registration deadline moved to April 9th.

“Typically it looks like we get maybe 5 to 10 people walking in on that last day, so it shouldn’t really be impacting a large number of people,” said Chillcott. "But just in case, we want to make sure you have every opportunity to vote before the primary.”

Chillcott shared it took about 6 weeks of checking with the State Department and even the Governor’s Office to confirm if a state mandated deadline could be pushed back for exigent circumstances.

The final answer was yes, because the extension would not interrupt operations and deadlines in the rest of the state, a court order and approval from the Board of Elections confirmed the extension.

So!
