Asbury Woods is continuing to celebrate the Year of Trees by hosting a family-friendly Arbor Day event on Saturday, April 27.

The nature center is inviting the community to participate in numerous hands-on activities including:

  • Tree ID: What to look for when identifying trees.
  • Measure the Impact: Measure trees and calculate the carbon they take in each year.
  • Hardwood and Softwood: Examine samples of softwoods and hardwoods to learn the
    differences between them.
  • Make a tree cookie: Decorate and take home a piece of Asbury Woods.
  • Tree Hikes: Learn about the variety of trees at Asbury Woods on a 45-minute guided hike.
  • Tree Giveaway: ReLEAF, an initiative of Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, will be giving
away live trees so you can be part of their project to plant 275,000 trees in Erie County

“Trees form the backdrop for most of the Asbury Woods property and are core to the establishment
of Asbury Woods, that is why we chose “The Year of Trees” as our programmatic theme this year. Our
goal is to provide programs, materials and experiences that engage people to learn more and deepen
their appreciation for trees” says Executive Director, Jennifer Farrar. “The value of trees in a
community is well-documented, providing shade and lowering energy costs, attracting wildlife,
contributing to cleaner air, controlling erosion, reducing carbon in the atmosphere, beautification of
urban, shopping, and residential areas, and so much more! We hope that by highlighting this precious
resource we can engage the community to think about actions they can do to protect and nurture
trees.”

According to the Nature Center, Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska newspaper editor.

On Arbor Day, Americans are encouraged to care for their natural environment by planting trees, bushes and plants.
