If you've passed through Union City recently, you may have noticed a new mural pop up at the corner of Route 8 and Route 6.

But soon, that won't be the only one, as community members gather to do a "paint by numbers" event, where locals can paint part of a second mural to be installed in downtown Union City.

"So there's three murals that we are presently doing, and this particular one here will be going on the Congdon Hotel, and it will go on the upper edge of the hotel," said Tom Ferraro, of the Erie-based Looking Glass Art Project, the group which is leading the design.

"Along with two others, one we've just installed this week, that's on the Ace Hardware building. And then the third one will be installed later this summer on an apartment building that is across the street [from Ace Hardware]."

And for Martha Blair, who's Main Street Art Center in Union City is hosting the painting event, it's great to see the community come together through public art.

"I think it's a great thing because then people feel ownership of a project," said Blair. "And they feel like, 'I did that little corner right there, see that little spot? I painted that.' And it just makes them appreciate what goes into doing something like this and what you have to do to make it all come about."

So who paid for the new murals?

"We had applied for a grant through the Erie Community Foundation and the Union City Community Foundation, and we got over $270,000 to put into different projects and the 3 murals is one of the projects," explained Cindy Wells, Union City Borough Manager.

The most recent mural is expected to be installed by early June.
