Students in the Safeline Club at Corry Area High School have been planning to stage a mock prom night accident since February.

The idea is to spread the message to students to not drink and drive after their school prom, which is this Friday.

A pre-produced video set the story lines for a fictitious prom night tragedy.

Then at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday outside of their school, with the student body and faculty looking on, the plans got real.

Students staged a simulated two car accident that caused the death of one student, seriously injured others - trapping some in the wreckage, and led to an arrest for DUI and homicide by vehicle.

In the orchestrated accident, complete with real looking fake blood and injuries, students never broke character. Austin Nickerson was one of the actors with an injury. "We wanted to make it as real as possible so we get the message across of the real dangers of this and so we spent a good hour in the cosmetology room just getting all situated."

They collaborated with local firefighters, police, the funeral home, towing and insurance companies to put the mock event together.

First responder arrived on scene with sirens blaring and did their jobs, just as they would at a real accident scene.

Students who watched, including senior Mackenzie Spence, got the message. "It was just a lot to take in at once, since we do have prom coming up and we do know people who drink underage even though they shouldn't," she said adding, "it was a good lesson, I think."
