The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has resumed work on a $430,000 project to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists in the City of Erie.

The goal of the project is to encourage walking and biking downtown.

According to PennDOT, work began in September 2023 with the replacement of ADA compliant curb ramps and sidewalks.

This year, work will include the installation of wayfinding signs, bike route markers, network map kiosks, downtown gateway signs, and district identification signs, directional signs to key landmarks and updates to pavement markings for bike lanes.

Work resumed on Monday, May 6 and is expected to be complete by the end of the month.

PennDOT said the project area is 27 miles, which includes 11 miles along the Bayfront Connector Trail and 16 miles within Erie's urban core.
