As the summer road trip season approaches, you may find yourself behind the wheel of an RV or motorhome.

So if it's your first time, what do experts recommend to keep you, and others, safe on the roads this summer?

"Biggest thing is you want to make sure [is that] you have the right vehicle to tow it with," said Brenda Bailey, owner of Fame RV in Saegertown. "The other thing is when buying an RV, you don't want to skip on the accessories that go along with the RV, especially the weight distributing system. You don't want to buy a cheap weight distributing system or you're going to be white knuckle towing down the road. Buy an adequate weight distributing system and then you'll enjoy your towing process."

And Mary Fox, Administrative Director for Boyer RV, also offers advice to RVers both new, and experienced.

"Make sure your sliders are all the way in, make sure your doors are closed and locked," said Fox. "If you do have safety latches, the handles, make sure that they're on. And make sure that your propane tanks are shut off while you're hauling, those are the basic safety tips. Check your tire pressure, check your brakes, make sure your hookups are correct when you're hooking into your tow vehicle. And you should have a safe trip."

So how have sales been ahead of the Memorial Day weekend?

"The minute the weather breaks and the sun is shining, we are busy," said Fox. "Everyone is getting ready to enjoy the unofficial start of summer... I would say we're right on track to where we've been over the past couple of years, but it does increase, like I said right around Memorial Day. People are getting rid of their older campers, and getting into the newer more updated ones."

Experts also say it's best to leave extra room when turning or braking, especially for first time RV owners.
