ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)--KIDS COULD HAVE MORE PROTECTIONS WHEN THEY GO ONLINE, FOLLOWING THE unanimous PASSING OF TWO BILLS TO RESTRICT ADDICTIVE FEEDS FOR MINORS AND TECH COMPANIES' ABILITY TO SELL KIDS DATA WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT.

“This is a watershed moment for social media responsibility,” said  Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal (D-47th Senate District).

Other lawmakers said they are proud of the legislation they moved across the finish line.

“This I think is going to give kids their childhoods back. This is going to take the power of social media out of the companies' hands and put it back into the hands of users,” said Andrew Gounardes (D-26th Senate District).

THE LEGISLATION WOULD ALSO GIVE THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL THE ABILITY TO SUE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES WHO VIOLATE THIS LAW.

IF THE BILL BECOMES LAW, IT WOULD BE THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE COUNTRY.

SEN. GOUNARDES SAid IT COULD VERY QUICKLY BECOME A NATIONAL MODEL.

“This sends an unequivocal message that we are all united in trying to figure out ways of fighting back and protecting our most vulnerable—our kids,” he said.

THE BILLS STILL HAVE TO PASS IN THE ASSEMBLY BUT SOME LAWMAKERS ARE CONFIDENT THEY WILL.

LAWMAKERS STILL HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF BILLS LEFT TO PASs. They are expected to coNTINUE working INTO THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING.
