Conneaut, Ohio Community Coping After Recent Drowning
The search is over for a young boy that drowned on Friday in Lake Erie at Conneaut Township Beach in Conneaut, Ohio.
Conneaut Township Park and Beach draws thousands of people every year, although not a guarded beach that doesn't stop people down to cool off on a warm, summer day.
Karen Kennedy from Conneaut, Ohio took her grandchildren to her beach and said, "They have posted signs 'no lifeguard on duty', but you have to be careful. We have been coming to the beach for many years and sometimes the waves get pretty big, the currents are kind of unpredictable."
Assistant Fire Chief Steve Sanford has has handled more drowning cases than he likes to admit during his time with the Conneaut Fire Department. "It happens quite often. I can almost count, they seem like they happen just yesterday, in my time here, there's been almost every year", said Sanford.
But he said the teamwork he saw from fire and rescue operations over the past several days was unlike anything he's ever seen before. Support came from Cuyahoga, Geauga , Lake, Ashtabula, Erie, Crawford, Pennsylvania State Police, and the U.S Coast Guard.
"It's just astonishing to see all the agencies that came together for one common goal to make sure that this family could take their child home and it was just unbelievable", said Sanford.
Meantime, City Manager, Nick Sanford said the community support for a family from out of town was overwhelming. "There is no shortage of love that comes from the people of Conneaut, Ohio and the outpouring of food and provisions that was provided not only to the family but to the first responders, but it was an overwhelming sense of pride that I felt.", said Sanford.
There is a vigil set for the young boy Wednesday night at the Bluffs in Conneaut Township Park.
