Pennsylvania State Police have released information on a car accident on Interstate 79 that claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl from Fairview and detoured traffic on I-79 northbound for much of Sunday.

According to investigators, the fatal accident happened at 12:42 p.m. on I-79 northbound, north of the Kearsarge exit near Millcreek Mall.

The victim who lost her life in the accident was a passenger in a car driven by a 19-year-old girl.

State police investigators report that the teen driver was entering I-79 north from Kearsarge (exit 180).  As her car merged onto I-79 from the ramp it crossed the right lane of travel, and moved into the left lane of travel making contact with another northbound vehicle.

After the collision, the driver lost control of her vehicle which overturned multiple times, ejecting the 17-year-passenger.  The car came to rest on its roof in the right lane of travel facing north.

The other northbound car came to rest in the median.  Two men from Pittsburgh in that vehicle were unhurt.

Both teens from the car that rolled over were transported to UPMC Hamot by Millcreek Paramedic Service. The driver was admitted for treatment, the passenger was pronounced dead from her injuries at 1:17 p.m.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said the teen died of multiple blunt force trauma and indicated that she was unrestrained when she was thrown from the car.

State police are continuing to investigate.
