Thursday morning, the owner of Moxi Hair Salon, Sara McMillan, got a call that the pride flag in front of her business was torn down.

“We saw the damage. It was clearly grabbed and pulled off of the building. The screws were torn out and bent, so we know it wasn't wind," McMillan said.

McMillan said it was sad to see what happened, but she wanted to handle it the right way.

“Of course, I was upset and disappointed, but I decided what’s the best way to handle this, and that would be to make a donation on behalf of the person because obviously something deep within them is hurt and damaged, for them to do something so hateful. So, I made a donation to the NWPA Pride Alliance,” McMillan said.

McMillan said her husband put the flag back and reinforced it. She said Moxi Hair Salon aims to be a safe and inclusive place.

“We were the first gender-neutral salon in the area, which means we don’t price anything by your gender. It’s all by time and product, which is just a fairer and better way of doing it in my opinion. . . Since 2016, we became a Dress Code Project salon and it's by time and product, for the past 2016, we became a Dress Code Project and Strands for Trans. So, those are both organizations, non-profits that help salons become safer spaces for the LGBTQ community,” McMillan said.
