Pennsylvania State Police, a PSP fire marshal, the ATF and Union City fire officials are investigating a deadly fireworks explosion in Union City Sunday morning.

The first calls to rescuers went out just after 10 a.m. for the sounds of explosions and a garage fire at 8700 Hanlin Road, also known as Hanlin Cross Road.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook confirms that a person fatally injured by blast effects was transported by rescuers to UPMC Hamot Trauma and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

After notifying family, Cook has released the name of the victim as 55-year-old Michael Cross of Union City.

According to sources, Cross was a licensed pyrotechnician and may have been wiring some electronics for an upcoming fireworks display in the community when the blast occurred.

Witnesses at the scene told authorities Cross suffered injuries to the chest.

Union City firefighters with aid from Waterford and other volunteer fire departments worked to put out the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
