Presque Isle will have some beaches open for swimming on the Fourth of July as their lifeguard shortage continues. 

Beaches 6, 8, 10 and 11 will open at 10 a.m. Beach 3 will open at noon. 

These will be the only beaches where swimming is allowed. 

On unguarded beaches, people will only be allowed in the water up to their knees. 

That rule, lifeguard manager Bob North said, is important to follow.

“You can be out 10, 20 feet from shore in two feet of water and be pushed laterally like six feet and go from two feet to six feet of water,” he said.
