Animal shelters can be a lifesaver for dogs, cats and rabbits. One animal shelter, Because You Care, is dedicated to taking in animals, and finding them a home and a family.

"Our mission is to rescue animals that don’t have any homes anymore, so abandoned animals, rehabilitate them, any kind of mental rehabilitation they would need, so any behavioral issues . . . and get them all medically ready for their new adoptive home,” Executive Director of Because You Care Megan Duckett said.

One event to help shelters in the area is the third annual Cause for Paws Radiothon. Happi 927 partnered with Paws ‘n Claws and Harrell Automotive for the radiothon. Because You Care is just one of the shelters that benefits from the donations.

"We love being involved with the telethon. Not only is it a great time going down, and waiving at the cars, but it’s also great because we get a lot of donations and a lot of things that people don’t always think about. So, like cleaning supplies, we got a lot of last year, and that is so needed. We do so much cleaning with the dogs, cats and puppies. It’s a great thing. It’s a great benefit for all the shelters and us, and we’re just happy to be involved," Duckett said.

Another shelter is E.A.R.S., or Erie Area Rescue Society, which focuses on rescuing domestic rabbits. Fundraiser chairperson for E.A.R.S Kellie Clark said the radiothon is a great way to rally with other shelters.

"We love to be a part of things like this because all of the rescues come together and we might rescue different things and animals but we’re all in it for the same reason,” Clark said.
