The Community Blood Bank has issued an Emergency Alert for O-Negative Blood Donors. The blood bank is the exclusive provider of blood and blood products to 16 hospitals in Northwest Pa. and Western NY.

Due to a significant spike in hospital usage since the 4th of July  holiday, coupled with a decline in donor turnout, the need for O-Negative blood is critical.

The blood bank says O-Negative blood is a rare type, and it is universally accepted by all patients and is vital in emergencies. Only 7 percent of the population has type O-Negative Blood.

To encourage donations, the blood bank is offering $25 Country Fair Gift Cards to O-Negative donors who give at the Erie Donor Center this Thursday, July 11 or Friday, July 12.

Additionally, all donors this week will receive a Daffin's Candy Bar and will be entered for a chance to win a 4-pack of tickets to an amusement park of their choice (Waldameer, Cedar Point, Kennywood or Darien Lake).

According to the blood bank, blood shortages have far-reaching consequences, impacting medical treatments, childbirth procedures, and individuals with blood disorders or conditions requiring regular transfusions.
