As the political season heats up, there’s a renewed focus on senior citizens.

Recently, Erie News Now bureau reporter, Jackie Palmer, visited the Warren County YMCA to participate in the Silver Sneakers program and explore whether age is really just a number.

The YMCA’s Silver Sneakers program offers a variety of fitness classes designed specifically for older adults. From low-impact aerobics to strength training, the program encourages seniors to stay fit and socialize. Participants say the benefits go beyond physical health.

“The social part of it is great," said Ron Osche, Silver Sneakers participant. "We’ve met a lot of people here. It’s just good to get out and about.”

"This class has been great, socially and you know, physically," added Patty Osche, YMCA member. "Jenna really gives us a whole-body workout."

“Try to keep up with me," stated Shirley Pearson, Silver Sneaker participant. "A lot of people can’t and I'm over eighty years old!”

The instructors tailor exercises to suit all fitness levels, ensuring everyone can participate safely. They even invited our reporter to lace up their sneakers and join in.

“I have to say, it was a fantastic experience," stated Palmer. "The energy in the room was contagious, and the camaraderie among the participants was truly heartwarming. Jenna Swanson, the instructor here, emphasized the importance of staying active not only for the body but the mind as well, stating that staying social is a huge component of staying healthy.”

"Age is a whole attitude, it's an attitude," explained Marilla Norton, YMCA member. "Do I wake up with arthritis pain? Yeah but, big deal. The trick with arthritis is to keep moving.”

It’s clear that the vitality and resilience we see in these seniors are impressive.  This level of energy and dedication reminds us that age really is just a number, whether you’re in the gym or elsewhere.
