Large Schooner Docks in Erie for Maintenance

As the Lettie G. Howard makes its way to Alpena, Michigan, the Flagship Niagara League is helping out another tall ship.
On Friday, a visiting vessel known as "Wonder" docked along Erie's bayfront, for maintenance repair.
"It's what we do," said Flagship Niagara League Executive Director Captain William Sabatini. "As tall ship sailors, there are not a lot of us in the country, in the world, so whenever another ship needs a hand, we're always eager and happy to help out."
The 82-foot-long schooner is voyaging from Key Largo, Florida, to Detroit, Michigan.
"This boat is lovely in its size," said Wonder Captain Thane Richard. "It has a six foot draft and the rigging is less than 60-feet tall, so we can go a lot of different places that a boat of this class usually can't go. We can fit under all of the bridges on the interecoastal waterway. We can fit down the Erie Canal, which is how we came from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes."
While in Erie, the ship had its masts reset.
Once it arrives in Detroit, the ship will be part of the Planet School, offering educational programs and day sails.
"The Planet School will be an experimental , hands-on high school where students work on real projects," said Captain Richard. "They'll be doing a voyaging program, multi-week voyaging programs. I think that there is an opportunity to do real work and have a real impact."
The Wonder began its voyage on June 22, and is expected to arrive in Detroit on August 4.
