Dozens of fires continue to rage in the western United States and Canada causing thousands of residents to evacuate.

When wildfires are burning, debris and particulate matter go up into the atmosphere, making it possible for us here in Erie to feel the impact. Erie News Now medical contributor Dr. Becky Dawson tells us that as big as the world is, it's actually pretty small and connected when it comes to the ability of these irritants and pollution to move.

According to Airnow.gov, we are seeing clear to moderate levels this morning.

Dr. Joseph Rowane, a pulmonary specialist with AHN, tells us there's varying degrees of severity when it comes to who is impacted by our air quality.

"We tell our patients to stay inside, close the windows, and avoid exposure," said Dr. Rowane. "Air filters can help inside the house. If they do develop minor symptoms, saline nasal sprays and drinking water can help."
