Michael Burham Indicted on Murder Charges in Chautauqua County

The man who led police on a multi-state manhunt after escaping from a Pennsylvania jail is now officially facing charges in western New York.
Michael Burham, 35, is back behind bars in the same spot where his lengthy run from the law first got started.
A Chautauqua County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Burham. The charges include first-degree murder and arson, all connected to the May 2023 shooting death of Kala Hodgkin in Jamestown. He was indicted for Murder in the 1st Degree with Penalty of Life without Parole due to Kala being a witness to a crime prior to her death.
Kala came to police a month before her death. Additionally, charges were filed against Burham 2 weeks prior to her death.
The district attorney said she accused Burham of raping her.
Burham was on the run from western New York authorities when he was initially captured in South Carolina. He then escaped from the Warren County Jail by using a rope made out of prison bed sheets. He was eventually rearrested after a long manhunt and received a 25-to-50-year jail sentence in Pennsylvania.
A discovery compliance conference is set for August 23, 2024.
Burham is expected to remain in the Chautauqua County Jail while his New York state court case plays out. A trail is set for next summer in Jamestown.
