ANNA Shelter in Need of Foster Volunteers after Rescuing 100 Cats

The ANNA Shelter is in need of foster volunteers, after a large rescue from over the weekend involving dozens of cats.
Over the past week, the shelter has removed nearly 100 cats and two dogs from a home in Erie County.
"It's another sad situation where things just got out of control," said ANNA Shelter Found Ruth Thompson. "We're working on rehoming them to the same kind of environment that they came from, a home where they can be happy outdoor cats."
Many of the cats are suffering from injuries of neglect.
"A lot of it is untreated wounds, some infections, getting those under control," said Thompson. "Nothing that these cats have is communicable. All parasites are removed, for any cat already brought here. They are just neglected wounds that need to be cared for."
The shelter is calling on the community to help foster the cats.
"Where the foster comes in, is that TLC," said Thompson. "Sitting on your couch cuddling, talking to them, stuff that our staff sometimes doesn't have time to do as much as they want to."
The shelter already had 186 cats prior to this rescue, so the additional animals are putting a strain on the organization's resources.
"If you could help us out with cat litter or cat food, canned or dry," said Thompson. "We do like the Purina brand, if we can be picky, so if you can get us that, it would be fantastic. With monetary donations, sometimes you get a little more bang for you buck at some of the places where we by from."
The ANNA Shelter has also lowered the adoption costs for cats.
"We've reduced cat and kitten adoptions to $10 and $25 and they are fully vetted," said Thompson. "They are micro-chipped. They are spaded and neutered. They are parasite free. They have their inoculations. Everything is done."
The shelter also hopes you keep them in mind on Erie Gives Day, on August 13th.
Erie News Now is also set to host our annual Clear the Shelters event on September 7, to help pets in our area find their forever homes.
