Otters Make Trio of Moves; Sova, McDonald Traded

Trade season is (apparently) upon us.
The Erie Otters made three moves today ahead of training camp, including moving their captain.
Defenseman Spencer Sova was traded to the Brampton Steelheads. In return, the Otters get four picks (three conditional): a 2025 2nd round, 4th round in 2026 & 28, a 15th round pick in 2028, and rights to Coben Bryan.
Sova was drafted 8th overall by the Otters in 2020. He's averaged just over half a point per game.
Erie also traded away another over age player, this time dealing forward Bruce McDonald to the Owen Sound Attack. A 2027 6th round pick is the return. McDonald tallied his OHL career high in points last season with 35.
The Otters did make a move to acquire scoring talent, however. Erie traded for forward Gabriel Frasca and a 2028 10th round pick from Kingston, in exchange for six draft picks.
Frasca was drafted 17th overall in 2022. He tallied 67 points in just over 100 games in the OHL and is ranked 85th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
Erie opens up training camp on Saturday, August 24th.
