Coroner Identifies Human Remains Found in Allegheny River as Warren Man
The human remains found over the weekend on King Island in the Allegheny River have been identified, according to the Forest County coroner's office on Thursday.
Christopher Smith, 51, of Warren, was identified using dental records with the help of a forensic anthropologist at Mercyhurst Univesity, coroner Norman Wimer said.
A woman reached out after the remains were found because her son had been missing from Warren since January, and it turned out to be him, according to Wimer.
There is no official cause and manner of death, but the coroner said there are no signs of trauma, and there is nothing suspicious about Smith's death.
Wimer said Smith walked away from a rehabilitation center in Warren where he was being treated in January.
Kayakers who were apparently looking for a place to camp made the discovery Saturday.
King Island is located about a mile south of a boat launch.
