An Erie resident is currently in a coma after he suffered a traumatic head injury hours after arriving at his honeymoon destination.

The couple, Gabe and Lauren, were married on September 21, 2024, and two hours after arriving at their resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Gabe suffered a severe injury.

According to the couple's GoFundMe page, Gabe suffered a severe head injury after he slipped and hit the back of his head on the tile and stone floor.

The GoFundMe page, set up by a friend of the couple, goes on to say that after hours of challenges with a private hospital, Gabe received a CT revealing a large brain bleed requiring emergency surgery.

However, the GoFundMe page states that hospital refused to operate on Gabe and instead transferred him to a public facility. By the time surgery began, Gabe had already slipped into a coma.

“At this time, Lauren tried to set up an air ambulance to fly him to Miami, since this was the closest state he was cleared to fly to. This took over 24 hours to accomplish because they needed to find an accepting hospital and dealing with the effects of the hurricane,” the fundraiser reads. “Lauren had to arrange for a second air ambulance to bring him home to Erie, PA, where he is now at UPMC Hamot in their Trauma ICU unit, still in a coma and on a ventilator...”

The GoFundMe page was created to help the couple with medical costs, along with the years of rehab Gabe may face.

As of 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, the GoFundMe page has raised over $45,000 of its $50,000 goal.
