Local LGBTQ+ Leader Worried About Second Trump Term
It's been a week since former president Trump became president-elect Trump again. There are concerns about what another Trump presidency could mean for the LGBTQ+ community.
The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ crisis hotline, reported a 700% jump in calls the day after the election. A lot of concern is coming from what some describe as hateful rhetoric Trump used during the campaign. He has said he wants to get rid of some transgender rights. The conservative plan called Project 2025 wants to eliminate many protections for the broader LGBTQ+ community.
Alex Sphon, president of the NWPA Pride Alliance, said he's worried about what could happen in a second Trump term. He said the community is resilient and ready to fight if they need to but they’ll need help.
“If you know a queer person, this is a time that we need your support,” Sphon said. “Your kid could be queer. You don’t know how many people around you identify as queer. If we start losing our rights it’s a really slippery slope.”
