Millcreek Township is making progress on its Presque Isle Gateway District  project.

According to Millcreek Township Supervisor Kim Clear,  the former Bel-Aire Hotel is set to be demolished in December.

The township is also putting out demolition bids for the former Grasshopper building, after a consultant determined that it has no historical significance.

"For the Grasshopper building, yes we did receive a report back from our consultant that we had do a deep dive into the historical significance of the building," said Clear.  "At this time, we are looking at bids for demolition."

The Bel-Aire Hotel and Grasshopper are two of the five buildings that the township purchased for nearly $7.2 million, with the intent of redevelopment.

The Manor Motel, Sandbar and Joe Roots Grill have already been demolished.

Back in 2002, the area along West 8th Street was rezoned as multi-use, so once the two remaining buildings are demolished, the township hopes to attract commercial retail and residential developer to Millcreek.

"We're looking at mixed use," said Clear.  "You can think of things such as shopping on the first level, some apartments on the other levels, we're thinking hotels, and other places where people can come and stay."

Clear expects the demolition of the Bel-Aire Hotel to wrap up by next April.
