While some may be dreading the incoming snowfall expected to hit Erie this week, some companies are thriving because of it.

Four years ago, we spoke with Plowz and Mowz, a flourishing snow plowing and landscaping company whose teams worked endlessly to clear driveways day and night. However, in recent years, the sharp decline in snowfall has left landscaping and snow plowing companies struggling.

Wills Mahoney, co-founder of Plowz and Mowz, shares that while their company managed to stay in business, but this doesn't account for the thousands of others across the nation that didn't.

Mahoney said, "I know there are a lot of companies in the Erie, PA area that have gone out of business due to this. Obviously, we did get hurt from this also."

According to Mahoney, who previously saw a steady stream of weekly snowstorms, receiving hundreds of orders per day, the decline in snowfall has reduced demand to about half the volume of orders they typically received.

Mahoney explains, "In the past, we would do 1,000 snow plowing jobs. Referring to years ago, but last winter, we probably had about 400 orders."

To survive, like many others in the industry, they shifted their focus to rely on other services. Mahoney said, "We still focus on our other services, so when it didn’t snow last year, we were very heavy on spring cleanup."
