Logistics Plus' Latest Effort to Support Ukrainians
The three-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is quickly approaching.
Months later, there are still new ways people in Erie are showing support to those in Ukraine.
Logistics Plus has been a huge supporter for those in Ukraine. They have sent supplies, money, and even have an office in the country with 70 employees still working overseas. Staff at Logistics Plus know how challenging these last few years have been and they are still committed to provide support to people effected by the war.
Jim Berlin, the Founder and CEO of Logistics Plus is getting ready to embark on a ten-day cruise to Antarctica. He will explore the Drake Passage, complete a polar plunge and visit a Ukrainian research base.
"I think everyone is researching Antarctica to see what's there. It's pretty unexplored territory. I think there are seven bases, it's funny, no one owns Antarctica, it's open to a bunch of different countries to explore", said Berlin.
Logistics Plus continues to support those in Ukraine. Their latest effort is by bringing items from Erie to a Ukraine research facility in Antarctica. Berlin isn't the only passenger looking to help people in Ukraine. As Berlin explained, "Scott Kelly, the astronaut, is a big fan of supporting Ukraine and has done a lot of work for it, which we have done as well. So we are happy to be able to go down there and we are going to bring some t-shirts, from the hockey camp that we sponsored for the Ukrainian kids that we will give to them as a gift. "
Also on board the voyage will be two Ukrainian war veterans. According to Berlin, "I think both of them were prisoners of war. One of their husband's died fighting. Just to hear stories of survival, for them it's a break, a chance to get away from the war."
While Berlin is eager to learn more about the Ukrainian research facility, his thoughts remain with his own employees in Ukraine. "I talk to these people every day and the heroism of our people there and in Ukraine of the people in general is amazing. We have been working on a big effort to get them energy. Winter is coming, Russia has been bombing a lot of their energy, generation plants, we are trying to find ways to find alternative heating sources", said Berlin.
He hopes this trip reminds people about the men and women fighting for their country. As Berlin described, "People are thinking about them, not forgetting about them. They were the main news in the world for a while, but now you have the Middle East and elections and it kind of goes to the further back pages."
Berlin will be joined by some other pretty famous passengers on this cruise including William Shatner, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Scott Kelly.
They are set to leave on December 19.
