The Anticipated Snowfall over The Weekend, and How It Affects Preparations for Local Businesses
"Everything's ready to go. All we need is for it to get cold and snow."
Andrew Helmi, general manager at Mount Pleasant of Edinboro ski resort, is awaiting a potential Thanksgiving weekend "gift" for the business.
With heavy, wet snow expected in the forecast, he has been getting the ski lift and slopes ready for the winter season.
"We've done a lot in the background that people don't see," Helmi said.
Helmi mentioned the late November snowfall could be the very thing the ski resort needed, especially looking back at last year's winter...or lack thereof.
"It wasn't ideal. It was a little bit milder than we would have liked," Helmi said. "[Over] the last five years, we've more than tripled our snow making capabilities."
While Mount Pleasant is welcoming the potentially heavy snowfall, Leon Construction Inc., on the other hand, is possibly expecting a few more phone calls to come their way.
"Especially if we would get a lot of snow at once, yeah, we get a lot of calls," Manager Paul Kokhanevich said.
Kokhanevich confirmed that summer is the busiest time of year for roofing calls, but they can also pick up during the wintery weather.
The First Warning Team says this weekend is anticipated to be a mixture of normal to wet snow. With 12 inches of wet snow, for example, it can be heavier when accumulated on home roofs, totally over 18,000 pounds.
"Call a professional to check your roof out," Kokhanevich said. "If you get too much snow, get somebody out there to maybe clear it off."
Another word of advice from Kokhanevich: clean out those gutters.
"If your gutters are not clean, there's a potential of ice backing up," he said.
