New Study Highlights the Benefits and Risks of GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications are a class of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, such as Ozempic. According to Healthline, 13% of U.S. adults have used them. Dr. Becky Dawson, a professor at Allegheny College, shares that the benefits of these medications go far beyond just blood sugar and weight control.
“They’ve found a lot of things, and I think the most important is that they’re really helpful with addictive and behavioral health,” she says.
According to Nature, a study of 200,000 patients found that those on GLP-1 medication were less likely to experience neurocognitive disorders, substance abuse issues, and even Alzheimer's disease, compared to those who weren’t on the medication.
"In addition to the benefits we've already seen in previous studies—such as a lower risk of heart attack and stroke, and a decrease in dementia—it’s pretty fascinating and amazing that a drug originally made to help with weight loss and obesity control now shows so many other health benefits."
Dr. Dawson highlights that the study also shows that people taking the medication are at higher risk for gastrointestinal issues, stomach paralysis, and joint and bone problems like arthritis.
"Yeah, they're seeing a lot of risks associated with the GI tract, the pancreas, and the kidneys. These risks can be managed with proper monitoring, and there are things individuals can do to reduce them. But they are risks that should not be ignored."
