Thieves are targeting individuals who rely on food stamps, leaving many vulnerable and struggling to make ends meet. Jason Burrows, a resident of Meadville, knows this all too well, having experienced firsthand how his funds were stolen through card skimming. After speaking with multiple friends, he realized he was not alone in falling victim to this crime.

"We got our food stamps two days ago. We went to use them the next morning and realized every last dime was drained," Burrows shared. "So, it affects a lot of people. There are people like me who work two jobs, and after I pay all the bills, I still have no money for food, so we rely on stamps, and now we can't afford food."

Robert Rosado, who divides his time between Philadelphia and Meadville, witnessed the devastating effects of card skimming while in Philadelphia, where friends were left starving after their benefits were stolen. Upon returning to Meadville, he discovered the situation was just as severe there.

"I never would've thought it would've happened here. If it happens in the city, this could take over this town," Rosado remarked.

Jonathan Hendrickson, a Deputy State Inspector with External Affairs for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, highlights the broader issue, citing concerns from across the state. Pennsylvania State Inspector General Michelle A. Henry stresses the severity of the problem, stating, "EBT card skimming is a serious issue not only affecting residents in Erie County and across Pennsylvania, but across the country – and our hearts go out to those whose benefits have been stolen by these predatory scams. We urge all Pennsylvanians to remain vigilant, protect their personal information, and promptly report any theft to their local police and OSIG so we can work together to stop these crimes. OSIG and our partners at the Department of Human Services remain committed to ensuring that benefits stay with the Pennsylvanians who need them most."

Stay vigilant and follow guidance from the FBI, Department of Human Services (DHS), and USDA to protect their personal information. "
