Pennsylvania is cracking down on distracted driving with a new law this year.

Starting June 5, 2025, a new law called “Paul Miller’s Law” will make it illegal to use a handheld mobile device while driving.

For the first year, violators will receive written warnings, but by June 2026, fines will take effect. The law is named after Paul Miller, who was killed in 2010 by a distracted driver.

PennDOT and safety officials are urging drivers to stay focused behind the wheel. Last year, Pennsylvania saw over 11,000 crashes and 65 deaths caused by distracted driving. In the northwestern Pennsylvania, there were 540 crashes and six fatalities.

Officials recommend putting your phone out of reach, using hands-free technology, or pulling over to text. They remind drivers that even small distractions, like eating or adjusting music, can be deadly.
