Penn State plans to close some branch campuses due to declining enrollment and financial challenges, but Erie's Behrend campus is one of the seven largest campuses that will remain open.

In a letter, University President Neeli Bendapudi says the decision comes after years of study and efforts to stabilize the Commonwealth Campus system. The future of 12 smaller campuses is under review. A final recommendation is expected by the end of the semester, with closures not happening before the 2026-27 academic year.

Bendapudi emphasizes that all current students will be able to complete their degrees, either at another campus or online. Faculty and staff will receive support, including reassignment opportunities.

The closures aim to ensure a sustainable future for Penn State’s mission of education and community service, according tothe letter. Officials say the decision reflects demographic shifts and declining local populations, making it impossible to maintain all campuses.

The seven largest campuses not impacted by the closure plans are Abington, Altoona, Behrend, Berks, Brandywine, Harrisburg and Lehigh Valley.
