PIAA Removes, Suspends Teams from Tournament Following Brawl
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) has removed Meadville Area Senior High School and Uniontown Area High School from the PIAA Inter-District Basketball Tournament and has suspended them from participating in the remainder of the 2024-25 basketball tournament, following a brawl last Friday night.
Brian Mroziak, General Manager of WMBS Radio, was calling the game and believes the ruling is a little harsh, especially on Meadville.
Dr. Jennifer Galdon, superintendent of Crawford Central School District, agreed and released a statement to Erie News Now.
"The Crawford Central School District is disappointed by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (PIAA) decision to disqualify the Meadville Boys’ Basketball Team from the PIAA Inter-district Basketball Tournament following the events. While we do not condone any behavior that disrupts the integrity of high school athletics, we believe this decision unfairly impacts the student-athletes who were not involved in the incident. Our district remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all athletes, coaches, and spectators. As a result of this incident, we are taking steps to strengthen our policies, safety, and expectations for sportsmanship. The district remains committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct in athletics and fostering a positive environment for our students. We appreciate the ongoing support of our community as we work toward these improvements."
Going forward, Mroziak said for an incident like this to not happen again, it starts with the example being set by the parents and coaching staffs.
