EBT Scams Drain Benefits, Leaving Families Desperate and Struggling to Survive
Across the region, EBT scams are leaving families hungry and desperate. One of the victims, Michael Domedion, lost $944 when his card was drained just two hours after his benefits were deposited. "They're going to have to beg people for food. They're going to have to steal. I mean, families are devastated," said Domedion.
The funds were spent in Chicago, Illinois, a location where many other victims have reported their stolen money being used. Domedion shared his frustration, saying, "And it's the same as me—once the food stamps come in, they're wiped out before morning. You don't even get a chance to spend any."
Domedion, who is disabled and suffers from COPD, says he would be starving if not for the support of his brother. But for others without that support system, the reality is far more dire as they struggle to survive with no assistance in sight.
Human Services Secretary Valerie A. Arkoosh provided several updates on scams in Pennsylvania, including the news that the federal government will not reimburse stolen benefits. She explained, "Part of the reason you didn’t see it as a budget initiative yet is because we have seen two states that have already begun inflation on it, and they have had some IT problems on the back end."
Pennsylvania State Inspector General Michelle A. Henry addressed the broader scope of the issue, stating, "EBT card skimming is a serious issue not only affecting residents in Erie County and across Pennsylvania, but across the country. Our hearts go out to those whose benefits have been stolen by these predatory scams. We urge all Pennsylvanians to remain vigilant, protect their personal information, and promptly report any theft to their local police and OSIG so we can work together to stop these crimes."
