Two measles cases linked to international travel have been confirmed in Erie County, according to the health department.

Health officials say the risk of community spread is low but urge vaccination to prevent infection.

Erie County is working with the state to notify potential contacts and provide guidance.

Measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air for hours. Symptoms include fever, cough, red eyes, and a rash. It can lead to serious complications, especially in young children.

Fully vaccinated individuals are 97% less likely to contract or spread the virus. Vaccines are available for all age groups, with the first dose recommended at 12 to 15 months and a second at 4 to 6 years.

The CDC reports over 350 measles cases nationwide this year, including in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Anyone with symptoms or concerns is asked to avoid public spaces and contact their doctor.
