The Effect of Auto Tariffs on New and Used Car Parts
Some tariffs can start to go into effect as early as Wednesday and they could have an effect on many industries, including the auto industry.
Staff at Jay's Auto Wrecking in Edinboro said they aren't too worried yet about the effect of tariffs. In fact, staff said they have had a very good spring season so far and business is picking up once again.
According to Charlies Steadman who has worked at Jay's Auto Wrecking for years, "It seems to be a little bit more business now than what there has been recently. A lot of the newer cars, they are not lasting as long as they used to."
With cars breaking or not having a long life expectancy, staff said they are seeing more inventory and parts come onto their lot. Steadman said they have been taking in more cars from different municipalities, "A lot of the townships are trying to get rid of the cars that are laying around and we do a lot of picking up and we sell a lot of used stuff and it gets pretty crazy around here sometimes."
Scrap metal plays a big part in their business. The price of scrap metal has also been fluctuating and Steadman said it's another good sign for business. "The price of scrap has been kind of strange. Usually in the spring, it does come up a little bit. It came up real well this year and now it's kind of hovering and fluctuating a little bit, so hopefully it stays up. I think we are going to start producing more of our own, so hopefully that will help and supply some jobs for some people", said Steadman.
He said they have already seen business pick up with the possibility of auto tariffs and the believes it could continue, "I think we will see a little bit of an increase but time will tell."
They have also noticed that people have to get new cars frequently and they believe it's because vehicles aren't made the way they were used to.
