Ordinance to Rename Street in Honor of College Wrestling Star Fails to Pass

As the father of Penn State wrestler Carter Starocci, Christopher Starocci has a lot to be proud of.
"I couldn't be more proud," said Mr. Starocci. "Just the way he handles himself as a man. Some people like it, some people don't, but he's comfortable in his own skin and that's what makes me proud and his mother proud."
Carter recently made history, after becoming the first wrestler to win five NCAA Division 1 championships.
"I cried," said Mr. Starocci. "I couldn't control myself. I kind of let it go."
As a way to honor Carter's accomplishments, Erie City Councilman Chuck Nelson presented an ordinance to rename the area of West 30th and Cascade Streets as Carter Starocci 5 X Way.
"I think it's a matter of doing as much as we can to acknowledge the way this young man has represented our city and the honor that it brings to our city." said Nelson.
However, in a 3-3 vote, the ordinance failed to pass, with Erie City Council members Ed Brzezinski, Maurice Troop, and Mel Witherspoon voting against it.
"What Carter did accomplish is a real feather in the bonnet of the city of Erie," said Brzezinski. "That's why we were planning on giving him a key to the city of Erie, not a metal sign that's going to hang on a telephone pole."
"The celebration for young Carter will take place," said Witherspoon. "We just have to work out some small issues."
Carter's father describes council's decision as disappointing.
"It's just super confusing to me as to why Mel Witherspoon, Maurice Troop, and Ed Brzezinski kind of shot that down." said Mr. Starocci.
Christopher hopes city council will reconsider its decision and rename the street in honor of his son.
"It's not just for Carter or his family, but it's for the schools he attended and it's also for the community, the kids to look up to," said Mr. Starocci. "It's about the future of the kids, and I think the adults of this city need to start stepping up and make this happen for the youth."
