The Barber National Institute’s Bollinger Campus in Warren is continuing to grow its wellness offerings—thanks in large part to local donations through the annual Warren Gives campaign.
Participants at the campus are already benefiting from physical education classes, a walking group, and a drum circle. Now, thanks to funds from past Warren Gives events, the campus has added additional classes including visits from dietary professionals who teach healthy eating habits and nutrition education.
“We've been able to expand our program more and offer our clients things that they have been asking about," stated Kristy Engstrom, Community Support Professional. "They have goals that they want to meet, and it's been wonderful to be able to support that, it's just a lot of fun to help them be their best person."
“Since adding this program, we've seen our clients get more mobile and even lose weight," added Tara Ciukaj, fellow Community Support Professional. "They are cooking healthier for themselves, asking their caretakers to make healthier foods too. It's a wonderful thing to see because we want them to be able to thrive, not just as a person with a disability, but as a regular person."
To support this growing mission, the Barber National Institute Bollinger Campus will hold a hiring event on Wednesday, April 16, from 10:00AM to 12:00PM.
The organization is seeking community support professionals to work with adults with intellectual disabilities and autism.
Looking ahead, the campus is also preparing for the next Warren Gives event on Wednesday, May 14th, and is hopeful for continued support from the community to help expand and sustain these vital programs.
