Diverse Erie’s Economic Impact: Addressing Racial and Economic Disparities in Erie County
Diverse Erie, Erie County’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission, has been working to tackle longstanding racial and economic disparities in the region. Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, the commission was created in response to concerns raised by then County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper and Erie County Council. To evaluate the effectiveness of its initiatives, Diverse Erie commissioned an economic impact study conducted by Parker Strategies, and the results indicate significant progress.
Positive Economic Impact
Gary Lee, Chief Administrative Officer of Diverse Erie, highlighted the findings of the economic impact report, which revealed a substantial return on investment. According to Lee, the commission’s $3.5 million investment has generated a $5.7 million return, representing a 63% return on investment. Lee described this as a “huge impact,” underscoring the success of the commission’s efforts.
Lee said the report also detailed other measurable outcomes. "Thirty-two jobs have been sustained and supported though diverse Erie. The third (benefit) is the income tax, and sales tax, and payroll tax that is coming back to Erie County and the state," Lee said, adding "we found that to be close to $200,000."
Addressing Disparities and Empowering Communities
Diverse Erie’s initiatives focus on several key areas, including reducing healthcare disparities, increasing diversity in construction trades, boosting home ownership, and empowering entrepreneurs. The commission’s work has also supported local businesses through grant funding. Notable recipients of these grants include Lake Erie Woodworking, Camaraderie BBQ, and Taste of Love, all of which have benefited from the commission’s efforts to foster economic growth and opportunity.
Shaping the Future of Grants
Looking ahead, Diverse Erie plans to use the findings from the economic impact report to guide its next round of grant funding. Lee shared that the grant review process and updated guidelines are expected to be released this summer. The commission will promote the new grant opportunities through its website, social media platforms, and general media outlets to ensure widespread awareness and participation.
A Vision for Sustainability
Amid ongoing debates surrounding DEI initiatives, Lee emphasized the importance of creating programs that ultimately lead to self-sufficiency. He likened the process to learning to ride a bike and ultimately taking off the training wheels. "I look at some of these initiatives the same way," Lee said. "You have the training wheels, but at some point the training wheels need to come off and then the individual will be able to sustain his or her balance as they move throughout...in this case the course of life
