More Than One Million Sunflowers to be Planted in Girard
In just a few months, a field in Girard will be filled with sunflowers, 1.2 million of them.
It's the field behind the historic Yellow House in Girard. The Hagen History Center has partnered with The Sonshine Factory in Kane, Pa.
They turn sunflowers into alcohol.
The history center thinks this will bring a lot of attention to Girard.
“This will be one of the largest sunflower plots in the tri-state area. This will bring people in, and the scalability of this is pretty huge,” said Caleb Pifer, the executive director of The Hagen History Center
They’ll have different events throughout the summer, like picnics and photo opportunities. He said it brings the property full circle. Food crops have been planted there since the 1850s.
“In fact, this was one of the very first plots of land that was growing grapes for Welch’s back in the day,” Pifer said. “So, this really takes the entire property back to its first historical use.”
They expect the sunflowers to reach peak bloom in late July or early August.
Then they will be harvested and sent to Kane.
They’ll be made into whisky and vodka that you will be able to buy next spring.
