Warren County veterans who served during the Vietnam War were honored during a recognition ceremony held at the Warren County YMCA, May 8th.

The event, hosted by the Warren County Veterans Affairs Office in partnership with the YMCA’s Be Well Warrior program, marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. Originally planned for outdoors, the ceremony was moved into the YMCA gymnasium due to rain.

“We want them to know that they have not been forgotten,” said Brenda Franklin, Director of Warren County Veteran Affairs. “This has been something that the Veterans Affairs Office in Warren has been very focused on creating, an event that brings veterans together with multiple resources - to let our Vietnam veterans know that there is so much more available to them, and to truly show them that we are so glad they came home."

Veterans who attended were welcomed by local officials, fellow service members, and volunteers. In addition to recognition, several organizations were on site to provide information about support services available to veterans, including health care, counseling, and VA benefits.

“Back then, you came home and you kept your head down,” said Kevin Hall, Vietnam Veteran. “I know there are a lot of us veterans who don't like to speak of the Vietnam war, fifty years is a long time to wait for a welcome. But they are here and I think that they are feeling proud, and their family members too. I'm just proud to say it's about time."

Organizers say the ceremony is part of a larger effort to reconnect veterans with long-overdue support and appreciation. More outreach events are being planned in the months ahead.
